Empowering Women, Families, and Communities Through Courageous Leadership

The YWCA: A Legacy of Courageous Leadership

Eleanor Roosevelt, a trailblazer who championed civil rights, women’s leadership, and global unity, inspires much of my passion for the YWCA. During a time when segregation gripped the South, Roosevelt stood firm in her principles, refusing to speak to a segregated audience. The YWCA stepped forward, hosting her speech in its gymnasium when other venues turned her away. This bold act of inclusion cemented the YWCA’s role as a catalyst for change—a legacy that drives me to serve today.

It’s an honor to contribute to its mission

Why I Serve on the YWCA Board

Serving on the YWCA board is deeply personal to me. It’s an honor to contribute to its mission of advocating for women, addressing systemic inequities, and empowering families. For me, it’s about supporting the staff, families, and community members as we work together to create lasting change.

Pro Tip

For Leaders Seeking to Serve

If you’re a leader looking to join a board, ensure the organization’s programs align with your professional mission and vision.

Most importantly, find a community where you feel a sense of belonging and can make a meaningful impact.

When I joined the finance committee, I was a little bit outside of my comfort zone, but the team has welcomed me warmly. Board service should help you stretch and grow as a leader and community member.

Resources

The Power of Essential Services

The YWCA provides critical resources that help women and families heal, thrive, and achieve their potential. This appeals to me because the impact of my contributions is easy to see and ties in directly with my professional passions. It makes it easier to donate my time and help with fundraising.

Childcare Resources

As an educator, I’m especially passionate about the impact of early childhood education.

Did you  know?

Research from MIT shows that attending preschool at age 4 can significantly increase the likelihood of on-time college enrollment.

Children who attend quality preschool programs are less likely to require special education services or repeat grades

Beyond academics, preschool fosters essential social and emotional skills, helping to develop well-rounded individuals.

Wellness for All

I also consider myself a wellness enthusiast, and the YWCA deeply understands the importance of promoting healthy living. From yoga and swimming lessons to cardio and strength-building classes, there’s something for every fitness level and goal.
